When we decided to go into podcasting and create Coffee Bar Stories, weren't really sure how it was gong to work out. It's also a good thing to note that before this, Dad and Son have never done any type of Content Creation before and this was their first affair into the matter. After many, many, many iterations of ideas we decided on telling some funny stories from our past. We'd anonymize anyone in it including ourselves and them put them on Coffee Bar Stories. We wanted the feeling of when you listened to the podcast it was like you were with your buddies swapping stories.
So, with the idea in hand, we TRIED to cement a formula, The 3 Stories Formula:
Now this formula "worked" for us for maybe 3 episodes but the second we introduced a guest host in the formula, everything kinda disintegrated for us. After that we tried to adapt a more open formula. We'd tell stories, shoot some crap with the guests and have them tell some stories then we'd end the episode. Opening up our 3 Stories formula had some problems we didn't foresee. The big problem was we couldn't keep up on the story demand for the episodes. We were running the well dry and had trouble at some points filling an episode. Our second problem was some guests, not all, had trouble keeping up with the "anonymity rules" we had. We put the rule in place for the privacy and safety of both us and our guests. The guests problem also had scheduling issues, but those are to be expected. After a while we ended Coffee Bar Stories with a 20 Episode first season. We're rather proud of the first season albeit it's flaws.
After we ended Season 1, we took a hiatus for about 3 months. In that time we came up with following revelations.
So following that, we brought on Bubba as our new full time Co-Host, and moved the show into a more comedy skits and commercials formula. We wrote down a lot of our ideas and thoughts and then tried to see which one makes the others laugh the hardest.
Season 2 is where we really felt we got control of a formula for the show. With a completely revamped show and an all new Co-Host, we decided to lean fully into comedy and embrace our improv and slapstick sides where we could finally be the comedians we think we are.
We took The 3 Stories Formula and threw it out the window, in return we came up with the following:
Granted this looks like the most generic formula ever, it was supposed to. We do have a structure for how our skits are put into an episode but for the most part, we're able to re-order anything between the intro and outro and it works out great for us. We fully embraced not really having a formula and instead having a loose structure. To some this might be a no brainer, but let's just say we're not the sharpest tools inside the fridge. We kinda don't really know what we're doing.
We introduced the following segments:
We also have our DTZ Podcast Network, a spoof radio show/tv show where we put a lot of our skits that may connect with another. That goes into our Coffee Bar Universe, but we'll get into some other time.
With that we're looking forward to the future to see what Coffee Bar Stories holds. Thank you for taking the time to read this!
